Aleksey Shegolev was born on October 23, 1984, in Gorky, USSR. He moved to Israel in 1991 with his family before moving to Montreal, Canada in 1992. At fourteen, he developed an interest in music.
Shegolev attended the University of Montreal where he studied piano and composition until he obtained his doctoral degree in 2014 with exceptional distinction.
He has composed and orchestrated two full-length musicals. His second was performed at an off-Broadway theatre in New York City in the summer 2013. Shegolev has also arranged material for the orchestra Nouvelle Génération's 2013 and 2014 seasons. His "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" was performed at the Festival Classique des Hautes-Laurentides in August 2014 by tenor Simon Gfeller. In the same year, Shegolev travelled to Yinchuan, China where he worked as a pianist for Alain Nonat's master singers classes and also presented a lecture about storytelling in opera. The l’Association pour la diffusion de la musique d’Auguste Descarries (ADMAD) hired him in 2015 to complete an unfinished quartet by the late Canadian composer which will be performed this fall.
